Privacy

You can use g-sho without an account. Your searches, history and settings are then kept only in your browser. The dictionary is downloaded in small pieces as you search, and what you type isn't sent anywhere. Handwriting, and the camera and photos you read text from, are recognized in your browser; drawings, camera pictures and photos never leave your device.

The speaker button says a word aloud. For an English word with a person's recording, your browser fetches that recording from Wikimedia Commons (upload.wikimedia.org), which sees your IP address and which recording, as any website would; it's then kept in your browser. Otherwise your browser's own voice says the word: most voices run on your device, but some, such as Chrome's "Google" voices, are run online by your browser's maker.

If you sign in

Signing in is optional. You sign in with Google, GitHub, LINE or a passkey, and we keep:

While you're signed in, we also keep what this site syncs between your devices: your search history, the words you star or mark as known, your notes on words, and your display settings, and your study decks with their cards and review history. Images and sounds from Anki decks you import stay on the device you imported them on. Your Anki connection settings stay on each device.

There are no ads, no analytics and no tracking cookies. We don't sell or share your data.

Your data

In Settings → Account you can download everything stored for your account, or delete the account. Deleting it removes everything stored for it from our database right away. What's saved in your browser stays until you clear it.

Hosting

g-sho runs on Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare handles your requests and may keep logs of them, including IP addresses, for a short time to run and protect the service. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
